Hawaii Marriage License Requirements: A Practical Guide
Apply online, pay the state fee, and appear together before an authorized license agent. Hawaii issues the license without a waiting period, but the ceremony must happen within 30 days.
The Short Answer: Apply Online, Then Appear Together in Person
To marry legally in Hawaii, obtain a marriage license from an authorized agent. The Hawaii Department of Health directs couples to complete the online application, pay the required fee, and then appear together in person before a license agent.
The state currently lists a non-refundable $65 fee. Because fees and procedures can change, confirm the amount on the Department of Health page when you apply.
When to Meet the License Agent
Both applicants must appear together before an authorized agent no more than 30 days before the ceremony. Once the license is issued, Hawaii has no waiting period before the marriage can take place.
The ceremony must occur within 30 days of picking up the license. If it does not, the license becomes null and void; it is valid only within the State of Hawaii.
Identification and Documents
Bring valid government-issued photo identification. The Department of Health lists a passport, driver license, or state ID as examples. Proof of age is required, with a certified birth certificate required for applicants age 18 or younger.
The state also identifies situations that can require additional documents, including a recent divorce or death of a former spouse and a legal name change. Read the current list carefully and ask your license agent what applies to you before the appointment.
A Simple Destination-Wedding Checklist
Complete the state application, keep the locator ID or confirmation details, schedule the in-person appointment, gather the original identification and any additional documents that apply, and share the ceremony date and location accurately.
Do not leave the appointment to chance after arrival. The Department of Health notes that agents may have limited evening and weekend availability, so make a plan early and use the state’s current agent list.
Marriage License and Venue Permit Are Different
A marriage license allows the legal marriage to take place. It does not replace permission for a beach, park, or private venue. Confirm the license process with the Department of Health and the location rules with the agency or property that manages your ceremony site.
